Electric fencing is a versatile, reliable, cost effective way to control animal movement and manage pasture. This includes:
- Keeping livestock in
- Keeping wild animals out
- Seperating different animal groups
- Rotation of crops and pastures
- Fencing off eroding areas, trees, rivers and roads
At a basic level electric fencing is more effective at containing domestic animals (livestock) then traditional fencing. Electric fencing, like the products from Gallagher Fence, is far superior to barbed wire or woven wire fences because it is much safer. The electric fence sends a small electric pulse designed to deter the animal from wandering too close. After a while, it creates a psychological barrier in the cattle’s brain, keeping them within the confines of the fence.
Pasture Management and Rotational Grazing
Beyond just keeping animals in and out, electric fencing is the best way to achieve optimum pasture yield using rotational grazing methods. This approach works by keeping grass fresh, short and palatable which ultimately leads to increased meat and milk production as well as reduced supplemental feed costs. It involves grazing paddocks in rotation using a combination of permanent and/or temporary fenced grazing areas.

Electric Fencing Setup
There are two main features of an electric fence setup:
- Power System – the fence charger (or energizer) which supplies the fence with a small amount of voltage.
- Fence System – wire, tape or braid fence
When considering which equipment is right for you there are several features to look over and research first: The size of your cattle, the life expectancy of your fence, whether you will work with the animals inside the fencing, concerns about keeping predatory animals away and if your using rotational grazing. Ask yourself these questions to determine the equipment you need:
Power System
- Do you have a reliable power source?
- How much fencing are you looking to power?
- What is your location?
Fence System
- What do you want to achieve with your fencing?
- How long do you want it to last?
- What animals are you trying to keep in/out?
Getting the basics right is essential when it comes to building electric fences that work.
